Four Books That Every Author Should Own

As I started writing my first novel I wondered if I was doing it right. I know how to write. I had always received good grades on my writing assignments throughout school. But, my anxiety was getting the best of me and I wanted some help so my time would be well spent.

I searched for books to purchase since I would want to dog-ear them for reference purposes. The reviews on Amazon.com for the Writer’s Digest “Write Great Fiction” series of books had great reviews. There is a book for each of the following topics and each goes into great detail providing examples, compare and contrast of good versus bad writing, and even includes some exercises. The books are written by people who have many years of experience writing and editing.

Description and Setting

We often pickup on a story’s visual description to get that picture in our head, but what about other details that in real life make living a grand experience. This book explains how to use sensory description to make the setting real for the reader. It provides information about using imagery for smells, touch, temperature and more.

Plot and Structure

This book details how to organize your thoughts so the story flows. It suggests methods to use to make it easy to switch parts around as necessary. It talks about writing a list of acts, then scenes, then fill in the details to complete the story.

Dialogue

This is a tough area for many authors, since we all have our own way of speaking. And, when you add things like accents, languages, and cultures, this makes writing dialogue even more complex. For example, someone who comes to the United States from Europe would pronounce words with a touch of nuance. In “Dialogue” it shows how to give each character unique traits.

Characters, Emotion, and Viewpoint

This volume provides teachings for giving characters the detail required to make them life-like. It shows how to use feelings of frustration, love, or anger to motivate and move the story.

The above list of books pretty much covers all fiction writing topics and provides a convenient library of resources for any author.

Cyber Monday Stats

So, I smartly scheduled a free Kindle promotion for Moonlighting Bride from Sunday, November 29th, through Tuesday, December 1st. I included Cyber Monday in hopes of capturing the attention of online shoppers to download my book.

I think every other indie author was thinking the same way. My stats below tell the story.

Sunday, November 29, 2015, Evening
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #3584 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)
#287 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Romantic Comedy

Monday, November 30, 2015, Morning
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #2771 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)
#231 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Romantic Comedy
#489 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Contemporary

Monday, November 30, 2015, Evening
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #3834 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)
#316 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Romantic Comedy
#612 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Contemporary

These numbers indicate I initially started to go up in Amazon rankings, but then started to decline. This was disheartening since I was tweeting, posting, and promoting my fingers off.

Happily things turned around for Moonlighting Bride rankings on Tuesday as the numbers indicate below. Although I didn’t make it in the Top 100 Free in Kindle Store, I did make it in my category for Romantic Comedy and came close in Contemporary Romance.

Tuesday, December 1, 2015, Evening
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #896 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)
#74 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Romantic Comedy
#172 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Romance > Contemporary

I’ll continue to watch my rankings for the next couple of days and see if there’s any residual effect from the free promo. I plan to run more promos in the near future, but lesson learned with this one – I won’t be promoting online when everyone else is expected to do the same. I’ll post updates on my stats in a couple of days.

Best regards,
DK

Dear Reader

For most of us, marriage is a life changing event and for Jan Nichols it is no exception. Throughout the story she encounters one difficult situation after another, money issues, a little weight gain, feeling estranged from family and friends. And worst of all—her husband’s suspicious behavior after they return from their honeymoon. Torn between her love for him and her love for a high maintenance life style, Jan comes to realize that most importantly, love can overcome the conflicts.

I hope you enjoyed this story. Please return to my website for more information about the Happily Ever After series.

And, thank you for reading Moonlighting Bride

With warmest regards,
