With Jan Nichols career at an all-time high, the last thing in the world she wanted was for her husband’s family company to be ruined. So, when the FBI threatens to shut them down, she has to find out who is behind the false accusations and put a stop to it. But, when the stress from all the extra work threatens Jan’s pregnancy, can she count on family and friends to step up to help get her through it all?
Friday night and Jan Nichols tapped her fingers on the steering wheel of her roadster as she drove home from Hedge Corporation. Her favorite music on the radio. Her boss on vacation next week. And, she hadn’t experienced morning sickness in over several weeks. With the baby shower on Sunday, this was the most fun she was having in a long time.
Turning into her subdivision as she approached her house, she saw a black sedan parked on the street not far from where she lived. She laughed softly. “Mr. Daniels, are you dropping off my husband again,” she said as she put the car in park several yards away. Getting out of her car, she walked over to the vehicle, opened the door, and shook her finger at the man inside.
“Mr. Daniels, really? Why don’t you just come into our home—”
Two men startled, shifted in their seats, then quickly shuffled papers and equipment around.
“Lady, you’re not supposed to be here,” the driver of the vehicle yelled.
“What the hell?” The passenger shouted. “What do you think you’re doing? Mick, quick. Close the door.”
“Hey, you’re not Mr. Daniels.” Jan’s eyes scanned the interior of the car. A camera sat on the dash, paperwork, files, and listening devices strewn about.
“I’m sorry, but I thought you were . . . hey, who are you and why are you watching my house?” Her eyes focused on the folders and labels on their equipment. “FBI? You’re the FBI?” She held onto the door starting to feel weak. “Why are you watching my house? What do you want from me?” She screamed.
“Lady, get outta here.” The driver slammed the door shut nearly clipping Jan’s arm as he did.
Speeding off, Jan watched as the car disappeared. She stood in the middle of the street, watching the backend of the sedan until it was out of sight around the corner. She couldn’t catch her breath and trembled uncontrollably. “FBI,” she sputtered taking deep breaths. “Oh my God. We’re the ones being investigated. It’s us that the newspapers won’t reveal.”
