And now, for your Thanksgiving reading entertainment. Below is an excerpt from Christmas Runaway, Chapter 8, depicting Jan with her in-laws on Thanksgiving Day. Does it remind you of anyone in your family?!?!
Christmas Runaway
Jan looked out, standing in the archway from the kitchen and sighed with happiness. Her eyes scanned around her great room. She observed Rob’s family watching the Detroit football game, having a few beers, and enjoying the snacks she had prepared.
“What’s the score?” She asked openly. No one replied or even acknowledged her question.
Fine, she thought. So, the game wasn’t going well. She knew there would be better days ahead for Detroit football. No need to be a fair-weather fan. But, she didn’t dare tell the rest of them because they would just want to argue about it.
“Oh, damn it. Not again.”
Jan brushed back, not sure which one said that. She watched as if in slow motion everyone in the room jerked, feeling the blow that the Detroit football player just received.
“Are you sure I can’t help?” Denise was sitting between Ed and Pete on the couch. She scooched to the edge of the cushion, then lifted herself off.
The two guys looked at each other and split the difference between them so no one else could sit there.
“I saw what you did,” Denise scolded. “I’m coming back after I help Jan.”
“Okay. We’ll make room for you,” Ed said then winked at his son and elbowed him in the side.
Pete emitted a sinister laugh and nodded.
Denise followed Jan into the kitchen, pausing to look around, she seemed slightly shocked from the lack of food preparation activities.
“I appreciate the offer, Denise. But, Rob and I are going with a tailgate theme for this Thanksgiving dinner. Goes with the football game,” Jan said as she checked the refrigerator for more dip. “Don’t you agree?”
“A tailgate theme? Huh,” Denise said as she made eye contact with Rob. “So, not the traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and sides?”
“Oh, they’ll be turkey. Rob’s deep-frying it,” Jan closed the appliance door and paused as she watched their reflections in the stainless steel door.
Rob frowned and shrugged.
Denise opened her arms and shook her head.
He pointed at Jan with a questioning look and mouthed the words what was I supposed to do.
Jan turned slowly to give them a warning, then walked over to the island with a container of dip and a clean dish.
“Yup, all my wife’s idea,” Rob said loudly.
Jan rolled her eyes as she spooned the salsa into the serving dish. “What do you think, Denise? Do you like it?”
She cleared her throat, pursed her lips, and nodded. “Uh huh,” her voice was squeaky.
“Great,” Jan said and smiled. “Then we’ll do it again next year.” In her peripheral vision, she caught Rob and Denise in an angry stare down. As she walked out of the kitchen leaving the two to argue, she heard her husband and his stepmom mumbling to each other.
